Karnataka expands drought-hit list as ministers prepare for Delhi

Karnataka will designate seven additional taluks as drought-hit, bringing the state's total to 226. Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara confirmed that a high-level delegation, led by the Chief Minister, will soon travel to New Delhi to petition the Union Government for financial relief under the National Disaster Response Fund.

State officials are currently finalizing a memorandum to quantify the severe agrarian losses observed across the region this year. While the government previously sought 7,000 crore rupees to manage the impact of the crisis, current assessments suggest that the actual financial burden may exceed initial estimates. Parameshwara noted that the state has already appealed to the Union Agriculture Minister to relax existing NDRF guidelines to better align with the harsh realities faced by local farmers.

Beyond the drought response, the state administration faces mounting pressure regarding reservation policy adjustments. Parameshwara indicated that the Cabinet will convene tomorrow to deliberate on potential legal avenues, including a possible appeal to the Supreme Court or a formal request to include specific measures under the 9th Schedule of the Constitution. The outcome of these internal discussions will dictate the state's next steps in its dealings with the central authorities.
