The state-wide project encompasses 40 sites and carries a total price tag of approximately €1.5 billion. Burgenland Energie, already Austria’s largest renewable power producer, aims to add 2,000 megawatts of capacity—a scale equivalent to one-fifth of Austria’s current wind and solar output. These developments have already pushed the region’s energy independence from 50% to 75% over the last five years, according to chief executive Stephan Sharma.
EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer underscored that the initiative serves both environmental and industrial goals, positioning energy security as a core component of European competitiveness. Beyond the direct EIB support, the program has attracted a broad coalition of financial backing, including €100 million in coordinated lending from Erste Bank and Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, alongside participation from major institutions like Raiffeisen Bank International and Talanx. This collaborative funding model aims to transform Burgenland into a scalable prototype for regional energy self-sufficiency across the European Union.
