AfDB and WHO Accelerate $55 Million Health Project for Sudan

With nearly 40% of Sudan's health facilities shuttered by ongoing conflict, the African Development Bank and the World Health Organization have fast-tracked a $55 million emergency project. The initiative aims to stabilize primary care and provide critical infrastructure to regions where up to 80% of medical services have collapsed.

The five-day mission in Khartoum concluded on October 8, 2026, resulting in an aggressive action plan to expedite the procurement of medical supplies and emergency equipment. Under the Sudan Health Emergency and Infrastructure Project, or SHEIP, teams are prioritizing the delivery of malnutrition treatments and the establishment of emergency operations centers.

Beyond immediate supplies, the program is pivoting toward infrastructure resilience. Plans include solar energy installations and facility rehabilitations to combat chronic electricity instability, which currently threatens cold storage and vital medical equipment. AfDB Country Manager David Muthusi Mutuku emphasized that strengthening these foundations is the only way to maintain care for the 21 million Sudanese currently requiring health assistance. WHO Representative Dr. Abdinasir Abubakar noted that the project's success hinges on maintaining this operational flexibility within a landscape where millions remain cut off from basic services.
