Bernie Sanders Targets Billionaire Influence and Campaign Finance

Senator Bernie Sanders has launched a scathing critique of American campaign finance, labeling the current political landscape a playground for oligarchs. Targeting Elon Musk’s massive election spending, the Vermont independent argued that the influx of hundreds of millions from tech and crypto interests threatens the core principle of democratic equality.

Sanders pointed to a staggering expenditure between 2024 and 2026, noting that Musk alone poured over $650 million into electoral efforts, while cryptocurrency interests contributed $500 million, AIPAC $230 million, and AI advocacy groups over $200 million. These figures, according to the senator, illustrate a system where private wealth effectively buys political outcomes. Beyond campaign finance, he has aligned himself with Michigan candidate Abdul El-Sayed to demand a moratorium on advanced AI development, arguing that the future of humanity should not be dictated by a handful of tech executives.

This confrontation follows reports that Musk spent roughly $290 million to aid Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, a move Sanders claims resulted in a $696 billion increase in the billionaire's personal net worth. With Musk now directing $366 million toward maintaining Republican control of Congress, the senator’s call to curb the power of 'Big Tech Oligarchs' has gained urgency. The debate is further complicated by recent federal efforts to rebrand artificial intelligence as 'Super Intelligence'—a shift Musk has already adopted for his own companies following a Trump executive order.
