Tarsem Singh, working president of Akali Dal Waris Punjab De, demanded the government’s resignation, alleging that individuals who challenge drug trafficking face harassment rather than protection. Singh claimed the state’s “War Against Drugs” initiative serves as a facade, while activists are met with police action and intimidation. His comments follow reports of detained party members attempting to protest in Mansa.
Balwinder Kaur, mother of activist Amritpal Singh, echoed these concerns, describing an atmosphere of pervasive fear. She argued that the government’s failure to ensure public safety extends beyond the drug crisis to broader governance issues, including the treatment of public sector employees. The family of the deceased activist has now appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking protection for their remaining relatives.
Deputy Inspector General Harjeet Singh confirmed that police are tracking the primary suspect, noting that one associate has already been detained. Despite the official stance that the killing stemmed from personal vendettas, the National Human Rights Commission has intervened, requesting an formal Action Taken Report from the state. The commission is also urging the Chief Secretary to implement concrete measures to safeguard those currently working to combat drug abuse in the region.
