BJP demands Bhagwant Mann’s resignation following activist’s murder

The murder of anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jhota in Punjab has ignited a fierce political confrontation, with BJP leaders drawing parallels to the state’s 1984 insurgency. As opposition calls for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s resignation grow, authorities confirm the arrest of the primary suspect in Rajasthan.

Salil Kapoor, the BJP’s Amritsar district president, characterized the current climate as a total collapse of law and order. He pointed to the killing of Jhota, who had been vocal in his campaign against substance abuse in Mansa, as evidence that the state government is failing to protect its citizens. Kapoor’s remarks also referenced the recent murder of an Assistant Sub-Inspector, arguing that unchecked gang activity is creating a pervasive sense of fear among residents.

Responding to the unrest, law enforcement tracked the alleged shooter to a dharamshala near the Salasar Balaji Temple in Rajasthan. SHO Shankar Lal Bhari confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspect had been hiding in disguise before being handed over to Punjab Police. While the state government maintains that the shooting stemmed from personal enmity, the National Human Rights Commission has intervened, demanding an official report on the investigation and the implementation of safety measures for those fighting the drug trade.
