President Donald Trump confirmed the administration’s stance shortly after the announcement, noting that while he had not spoken with the ambassador, her departure was necessary given the nature of the reports. The controversy centers on findings from The Wall Street Journal, which documented messages allegedly sent by Guilfoyle to Trump supporter Eric Deters, requesting he settle $100,000 in personal credit card debt ahead of her July 2025 Senate confirmation hearing. Her legal counsel has challenged the authenticity of these communications.
Beyond the debt allegations, investigators are scrutinizing Guilfoyle’s interactions with Greek business elites. Records suggest she accepted private jet travel from Aktor Group CEO Alexandros Exarchou and luxury hotel accommodations funded by shipping magnate Nikolas Tsakos. The State Department’s inspector general is currently reviewing whether these benefits constitute improper gifts. Despite these findings, Guilfoyle maintains the claims are false and has vowed to defend her reputation while pledging continued support for the president.
