Opposition and BJP Clash Over Electoral Roll Revision

Conflict between the INDIA bloc and the ruling NDA intensified this week as Rahul Gandhi vowed to sustain nationwide protests against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah dismissed the opposition's movement as a political ruse intended to protect infiltrators.

Opposition and BJP Clash Over Electoral Roll Revision

Rahul Gandhi, flanked by INDIA bloc leaders, characterized the ongoing resistance as a singular mission to restore democratic processes he claims have been dismantled by the government. Asserting that his team would not stop regardless of the timeline, Gandhi accused the administration of eroding constitutional institutions. He specifically targeted the Election Commission, labeling the current electoral roll revision process a threat to the nation’s democratic integrity. Congress president Mallikerjun Kharge added that the public response to these protests reflects widespread concern over potential vote manipulation.

In response, Amit Shah moved to shift the narrative toward future electoral dominance, predicting a massive victory for the BJP-led NDA in the 2029 general elections. Shah framed the opposition's focus on electoral rolls as a diversionary tactic, accusing Congress of attempting to shield infiltrators under the guise of civic concern. He bolstered his stance by citing recent local body election results in Rajasthan and Tripura as proof of consistent public support for the BJP. Meanwhile, internal procedural hurdles have emerged for the opposition, as the Supreme Court Registry identified 14 defects in a writ petition filed by Gandhi and other leaders challenging the Election Commission’s recent directives.
