Amit Shah dismisses opposition influence following Gujarat poll results

Union Home Minister Amit Shah framed recent local election results as a definitive rejection of opposition parties, highlighting the BJP’s dominance in municipal contests across Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Tripura. He specifically targeted Rahul Gandhi, citing a recurring pattern of electoral failure and lost security deposits for key political rivals.

In the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation polls, the BJP secured 38 out of 44 seats, effectively shutting out the Aam Aadmi Party, which failed to retain its single seat from the previous cycle. Congress performance remained stagnant, managing only five seats. Shah pointed to these outcomes as clear evidence of public support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.

Beyond Gujarat, the Home Minister focused on broader regional shifts. In Tripura’s village committee elections, the NDA coalition claimed approximately 4,000 of the 4,600 available seats, capturing a 77.5% vote share. By comparison, Congress secured only 14 seats. Simultaneously, the BJP dominated Rajasthan’s local bodies, winning 90% of municipal corporations and roughly two-thirds of municipal councils. Shah noted that the Aam Aadmi Party lost its security deposit in over 85% of Rajasthan wards, casting these results as a broader lesson for opposition leadership regarding their weakening grassroots appeal.
