The meeting at Gandhi’s residence brought together key figures from the INDIA alliance, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. Participants intend to present a collective case to the media regarding alleged irregularities in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. This political coordination follows a formal petition filed by 11 opposition leaders, who argue that the Election Commission’s recent decisions demand judicial scrutiny.
Legal hurdles emerged immediately, however, as the Supreme Court Registry identified 14 defects in the writ petition. The court has specifically questioned the inclusion of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi as private respondents in the filing. The petitioners, invoking Article 32 of the Constitution, seek a comprehensive review of the poll panel's decision-making process. Beyond the legal technicalities, the event highlights a deepening confrontation between the opposition bloc and the national election body over the integrity of voter registration procedures.
