TMC Protests Election Commission Amid Allegations of Voter Irregularities

Trinamool Congress demonstrators marched through Kolkata on Tuesday, chanting slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest, targeting alleged procedural failures in voter registration, faced immediate friction as party leaders accused the BJP of weaponizing police and central forces to suppress their peaceful assembly.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh condemned the security response, asserting that the party’s youth and student wings had provided advance notice for the demonstration. According to Ghosh, authorities obstructed key routes across North and Central Kolkata, preventing supporters from reaching the rally site. He framed the police intervention as a calculated effort to shield the Election Commission from public scrutiny, arguing that the BJP’s involvement suggests a deeper political anxiety regarding the integrity of the electoral process.

These tensions follow broader agitation from the INDIA bloc, which recently escalated its concerns to the Supreme Court. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has publicly challenged the current Special Intensive Revision exercise, insisting that elections should rely on established electoral rolls until all eligible voters are properly accounted for. The party claims that the current revision process under Kumar has unfairly disadvantaged the opposition, creating systemic irregularities that threaten the fairness of upcoming polls.
