Delhi Police launches crackdown on social media disinformation campaigns

The Delhi Police Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit has opened four criminal cases against social media accounts accused of peddling fabrications during recent political protests. Investigators identified a network of Pakistani-linked profiles masquerading as Indian citizens to circulate inflammatory content and false reports regarding protest-related casualties.

Delhi Police launches crackdown on social media disinformation campaigns

Authorities have already purged approximately 500 social media posts identified as attempts to incite public unrest. This digital enforcement coincides with physical legal action against protesters in the capital, where police filed multiple FIRs for violating Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita during Monday’s march. Demonstrations centered on Barakhamba Road, led by Rahul Gandhi and other opposition figures, preceded a formal challenge filed in the Supreme Court concerning the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

The legal petition, signed by 11 high-profile opposition leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav, and Supriya Sule, currently faces procedural hurdles. The Supreme Court Registry has flagged 14 distinct defects in the filing, specifically questioning the inclusion of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi as private respondents. The petitioners contend that the Election Commission’s recent exercise of power warrants judicial scrutiny, citing alleged irregularities in the ongoing electoral revision process.
