Slain Activist's Father Seeks Federal Protection Amid Punjab Unrest

Following the daylight murder of anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jhota in Mansa, his father has formally appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for federal protection, citing a complete breakdown of state-provided security and immediate threats against his surviving grandchildren.

The elder Jhota, who vowed to persist in his son's crusade against narcotics, alleged that the Punjab administration not only failed to safeguard the activist but remains complicit by ignoring the influence of local drug syndicates. During protests in Mansa, he declared his readiness to face the same fate as his son, while calling for mass public mobilization to combat the state's deepening drug crisis.

The killing has ignited a fierce political backlash against the Bhagwant Mann-led government. Opposition figures, including Raja Warring, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, and Bikram Singh Majithia, characterized the murder as a direct consequence of ineffective law enforcement and the failure of the government’s flagship anti-drug campaign, Yudh Nashian Virudh. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu echoed these concerns, questioning the competence of the Chief Minister in managing the Home portfolio as lawlessness continues to escalate across the region. Jhota, who had previously been targeted by authorities in 2023, was shot by a local medical shop owner before succumbing to his injuries.
