EIB Targets Infrastructure and Digital Growth in Kazakhstan

With an investment pipeline approaching €3 billion in Central Asia, European Investment Bank Vice-President Marek Mora visited Astana this October to align regional infrastructure goals with EU connectivity strategies. Discussions centered on transforming Kazakhstan into a primary logistics and energy hub through the Middle Corridor initiative.

Mora’s two-day mission focused on bridging the gap between policy ambition and project delivery. By meeting with key stakeholders, including Transport Minister Nurlan Sauranbayev and leaders from QazAvtoZhol and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, the EIB aims to accelerate the development of transit routes. This effort builds upon a recent €150 million loan dedicated to rehabilitating 1,370 kilometers of roads, intended to boost trade flow and climate resilience along the Trans-Caspian corridor.

Beyond transport, the bank is pivoting toward critical sectors like water security and digital access. A notable €60 million satellite broadband project, developed alongside the European Commission and SES, targets 1,600 rural villages across Central Asia to provide essential services to three million residents. Furthermore, the EIB is evaluating potential partnerships in mining to support responsible raw-materials processing. These ventures remain contingent on rigorous environmental and social standards, reflecting the bank’s mandate to ensure that every financed project provides lasting economic value to local communities.
