Ireland Doubles Sustainability Loan Scheme to €1 Billion

With nearly 2,000 businesses tapping into the initial €500 million fund, the Irish government and European Investment Bank Group have doubled the Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme to €1 billion. The extension, running through June 2029, aims to fuel long-term expansion and green innovation for SMEs and agri-businesses.

The expansion addresses a surge in demand from small and medium-sized enterprises that exhausted the original allocation since the program's September 2023 launch. Managed by the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI), the scheme provides unsecured loans of up to €500,000 to help firms modernize operations and improve productivity. By partnering with commercial lenders—including AIB, Bank of Ireland, PTSB, Close Brothers, and Finance Ireland—the government seeks to bridge financing gaps that often hinder smaller operators.

Sustainability remains a central pillar of the initiative, with a mandate that at least 30% of all lending must target environmental projects. Businesses investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency, or climate action qualify for interest rate discounts, incentivizing a shift toward greener operating models. Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon noted that this capital is critical for farmers and food producers aiming to meet the climate targets outlined in Food Vision 2030. For Irish firms, the extended timeline offers the financial stability required to commit to large-scale, long-term capital projects while navigating evolving market demands.
