Delhi Police Files FIRs After Opposition Protest March

Conflict erupted on the streets of Delhi as police registered multiple FIRs against opposition leaders for violating prohibitory orders during Monday’s march toward the Supreme Court. The legal crackdown follows a high-profile demonstration led by Rahul Gandhi against the Election Commission's current electoral roll revision process.

Officers at the Connaught Place, Tilak Marg, Barakhamba, and Mandir Marg stations filed cases under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The protest saw a coalition of INDIA bloc leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav, and Tejashwi Yadav, rally against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. While the political confrontation played out on the pavement, a separate battle began in the Supreme Court Registry. Officials flagged 14 procedural defects in the petition filed by the 11 opposition leaders. The Registry specifically questioned why the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners were named as private respondents in a writ petition brought under Article 32 of the Constitution.

Despite the legal hurdles, the opposition remains defiant. Rahul Gandhi hosted a gathering of MPs at his residence on Tuesday, reiterating that the movement against the Election Commission’s recent decisions will persist. The petitioners are demanding a formal examination of how the poll panel implemented the revision process, claiming the integrity of the electoral rolls is at stake. Gandhi described the collective action as a unified stand against what he termed the erosion of democratic institutions, vowing that the coalition would not be intimidated by the police response or the ongoing regulatory scrutiny of their court filings.
