Rajendra Arlekar maintains schedule after Tamil Nadu gubernatorial appointment

Hours after President Droupadi Murmu announced his transfer to Tamil Nadu, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar boarded a 4 am Vande Bharat train from Thiruvananthapuram. The outgoing Kerala Governor opted to honor his existing commitments in Palakkad rather than pause his official duties following the high-profile constitutional reshuffle.

The appointment, part of a broader shift across six states, marks the latest transition in Arlekar’s career. His tenure in Kerala began on January 2, 2025, following an appointment by the President in late 2024. Before his time in Thiruvananthapuram, he served as the Governor of Bihar and, prior to that, Himachal Pradesh—where he became the first person from Goa to hold a gubernatorial post.

Arlekar’s background is rooted in Goa’s legislative politics. A former two-time member of the Goa Legislative Assembly and a former Speaker of the House, he also led the state’s BJP unit. His career path reflects a long trajectory from a grassroots party worker to a seasoned constitutional figure overseeing state administrations across India.
