Sukanta Majumdar criticizes INDIA bloc protest as mobocracy

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar has sharply rebuked the INDIA bloc’s “Chalo Dilli” march to the Supreme Court, labeling the opposition’s street-level agitation a threat to democratic norms. He warned that demanding resignations through mass protests risks reducing the nation to a banana republic rather than a functional parliamentary democracy.

Majumdar dismissed the movement as a dangerous precedent, arguing that if every political grievance were settled through marches, governance would collapse into chaos. He challenged the opposition leaders to abandon public demonstrations in favor of presenting concrete evidence to support their allegations. According to the BJP minister, the lack of public backing for these protests ensures they will remain politically futile.

The protest, led by Rahul Gandhi and joined by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, centered on alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Banerjee, who characterized the march as a fight for humanity, separately called for elections to be held using existing rolls until all eligible voters are properly accounted for. The opposition bloc concluded their demonstration by filing a formal petition with the Supreme Court, seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
