Opposition and BJP Clash Over Electoral Roll Revision Claims

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for elections to be held using existing electoral rolls until all eligible voters are properly registered. Her demand follows a high-profile march by the INDIA bloc toward the Supreme Court, where leaders protested alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision process.

The demonstration, led by Rahul Gandhi, saw opposition figures gather on Barakhamba Road to challenge the Election Commission’s handling of voter lists. Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan framed the protest as a pivotal moment for Indian democracy, claiming that voter roll manipulation is being deployed to secure wins in states where the BJP seeks a foothold. State minister PK Kunhalikutty echoed these concerns, calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and warning that current practices threaten the fundamental value of the ballot.

The BJP dismissed these allegations as a coordinated effort to destabilize democratic institutions. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia accused the Congress party of hypocrisy, noting that opposition leaders only attack the integrity of the Election Commission and electronic voting machines when they suffer electoral defeats. Union Minister Giriraj Singh characterized the protests as a charade, pointing out that the opposition accepts election results in states like Karnataka and Telangana while labeling the process fraudulent elsewhere. The BJP plans to counter the narrative with a series of public awareness rallies in Assam.
