Union Minister Somanna Faces Black Flag Protest in Shivamogga

Black flags greeted Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna in Shivamogga on Monday as Youth Congress and NSUI workers obstructed his convoy near Ashoka Circle. The demonstration targeted the Centre’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, forcing a swift police intervention to clear the path for the Minister’s visit.

The protest unfolded as Somanna traveled to a private event and a scheduled railway department meeting. While the Minister arrived by train for his official engagements, the atmosphere remained charged following his recent public clash with Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The two leaders have been locked in a heated dispute regarding the integrity of voter lists, specifically the handling of Forms 6 and 7.

Somanna’s visit follows his sharp criticism of Shivakumar’s participation in protests against the Election Commission. Challenging the Chief Minister to move beyond political agitation, Somanna questioned the legitimacy of keeping "infiltrators" and deceased individuals on the rolls. He urged the state administration to prioritize drought relief over election-related friction, warning that the public would deliver a verdict on the current government's performance in the upcoming cycle of four elections.
