Kerala Assembly Demands Removal of Chief Election Commissioner

The Kerala Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on Monday calling for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing deep concerns over the integrity of electoral roll revisions. The move follows allegations that technical manipulations and administrative irregularities have systematically disenfranchised marginalized groups and migrant workers across the state.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan introduced the resolution, highlighting that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls occurred without transparent criteria or proper notification. The legislative body expressed alarm over reports that Electoral Registration Officers had their authority curtailed by software-driven processes, effectively sidelining local oversight. The resolution explicitly demands a return to a selection panel that includes the Chief Justice of India, arguing that the current appointment structure compromises the Election Commission's constitutional independence.

Opposition members from the BJP challenged the motion, with V. Muraleedharan arguing that reports regarding form amendments were factually incorrect and had already been refuted by the commission. Despite this opposition, the assembly maintained its stance, insisting that the alleged exclusion of eligible voters threatens the core of democratic participation. The resolution serves as a formal call for the central government to restore public confidence by ensuring the body functions strictly according to the mandates of Article 326 of the Constitution.
