CJI Surya Kant Rejects Opposition Meeting Request Over Poll Protests

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has formally declined a request from the INDIA bloc to discuss alleged electoral irregularities, insisting that the judiciary remains an institution for legal filings rather than administrative lobbying as opposition leaders prepare to march toward the Supreme Court in protest of the Election Commission.

The CJI confirmed on Monday that he responded to the opposition's letter Sunday night, outlining why a private meeting with the delegation was inappropriate. Addressing reporters following the NHRC’s 33rd Foundation Day, Justice Kant maintained that while the Supreme Court doors are open to every citizen and elected representative, grievances must follow established judicial channels. The court’s position remains that such matters are sub judice and require formal petitions rather than the submission of memoranda.

Opposition figures, including Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, sought to present their concerns directly to the Chief Justice, but were directed to utilize the court’s filing system. Meanwhile, the central capital remains under a heavy security blanket. Authorities have deployed the Rapid Action Force and CRPF alongside local police, with barricades erected across key transit points. Metro access near the protest route is restricted until 4:00 PM on October 12, 2026, as security forces brace for the scheduled march.
