The investigation follows intense political pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has demanded accountability from the Congress leadership. BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj recently highlighted allegations that Akoijam subjected female students to inappropriate physical contact and explicit questioning during his tenure as a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Swaraj detailed claims that the MP conducted academic assessments at his private residence, including viva examinations held as late as 11:40 p.m.
Swaraj accused Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, of hypocrisy, arguing that their public stance on women's safety remains performative. She challenged the opposition to support the eleven female students who have reportedly brought these grievances forward. While the Delhi Police confirmed the registration of the FIR under sections 75 and 79 of the BNS, officials stated that the investigation into the specific conduct of the MP is ongoing.
