Zelensky Reports Russian Drone Strike Following Trump Ceasefire Claim

A Shahed drone struck a power plant in Kyiv shortly after Donald Trump declared an immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The Sunday attack, which also hit energy facilities in the Kharkiv region, directly challenged the U.S. President’s assertion that both warring parties had agreed to halt infrastructure strikes.

Volodymyr Zelensky expressed immediate confusion regarding the announcement, stating the ceasefire news came as a surprise. While the Ukrainian President confirmed his country’s willingness to support such a pause, he emphasized the need for Russian compliance. Moscow has remained silent on the proposal, providing no confirmation of an agreement.

The diplomatic friction follows Trump’s recent decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel, a move intended to stabilize fuel prices ahead of next month’s U.S. elections. European allies and Ukrainian officials have criticized the policy shift, warning it provides economic relief to the Kremlin. Since the 2022 invasion, Russia has consistently targeted Ukrainian heating and power grids, while Kyiv has retaliated by striking Russian oil refineries to disrupt the funding of the war effort.
