John Brittas Seeks Judicial Probe Into Alleged Delhi Police Assault

CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas has formally petitioned President Droupadi Murmu, Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, and Chief Justice of India Surya Kant following an alleged police assault in Delhi. The lawmaker claims he was physically targeted while speaking to the press, marking a severe breach of parliamentary privilege.

Brittas described the incident as an unprovoked attack on democratic institutions, asserting that the police action infringed upon both his rights as an elected representative and the broader constitutional freedoms of the citizenry. His appeal calls for an independent investigation and immediate accountability for the officers involved, citing recent Supreme Court directives that mandate the protection of peaceful dissent and fundamental rights.

Simultaneously, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal condemned the ongoing crackdown, alleging that Delhi Police forces are targeting journalists, bloggers, and protesters to suppress coverage of demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Venugopal accused authorities of creating a hostile environment where vigilante groups operate under police protection, claiming these measures are desperate attempts to stifle public opposition. Despite the reported mass detentions and use of force, opposition leaders maintain that the state's tactics will not break the resolve of those participating in the ongoing protests.
