Pargat Singh Takes Reins of Punjab Congress Amid Calls for Unity

Former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh assumed office as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on Sunday at a ceremony in Chandigarh. Replacing Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the three-time legislator from Jalandhar Cantt now faces the task of rebuilding the party’s standing ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.

The transition occurred at Punjab Congress Bhawan under the supervision of party in-charge Sachin Pilot. Addressing the gathering, Singh emphasized the necessity of collective effort to restore the state’s political image. Pilot echoed this sentiment, asserting that public disillusionment with the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party government provides a clear path for a Congress resurgence.

Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, newly appointed as the campaign committee chairperson, adopted a more aggressive tone. He pledged to challenge the ruling administration on issues of drug proliferation, rising gangsterism, and systemic corruption. Channi criticized Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for lacking a cohesive team, characterizing the current government as a hub for mafia activity. Meanwhile, MP Manish Tewari underscored the imperative for internal cohesion, framing the leadership change as a turning point for a unified party front determined to reclaim its influence in the state.
