Telangana Minister and BJP Clash Over Voter Roll Revisions

Alleging that 40 lakh votes were purged in Hyderabad under the guise of the Special Intensive Revision, Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has accused the BJP of orchestrating a campaign that disenfranchises citizens. The minister demanded accountability, while the BJP insists the process is a transparent Election Commission mandate.

Prabhakar challenged state BJP president Ramchander Rao to address the growing public concerns, citing the ordeal of former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, who reportedly faced bureaucratic hurdles to verify his own voter identity. The minister argued that if a high-ranking official struggles with identity requirements, the burden on daily wage workers and marginalized communities becomes insurmountable. He vowed to present citizens who have lost their voting rights, framing the issue as a direct assault on the democratic process.

Ramchander Rao dismissed the accusations, countering that the Congress party is merely attempting to shield bogus voters from removal. He pointed to previous remarks by Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi regarding the prevalence of fraudulent entries in Telangana. According to Rao, the removal of names is a standard, transparent procedure managed solely by the Election Commission of India. He maintained that the BJP has no role in the administrative mechanics of the exercise and characterized the Congress party’s rhetoric as a desperate political maneuver to protect illegal votes.
