Federal Government Imposes Emergency Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

President Asif Ali Zardari has authorized a state of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, effectively suspending the opposition-led provincial administration. The move follows a formal request from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet, which cited a total collapse of security and a failure to contain militant threats in the region.

The constitutional intervention, enacted under Articles 232 and 234, centralizes control in Islamabad and strips the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership of its regional authority. Hours after the proclamation, KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was reportedly detained while participating in a PTI-led protest march. Security forces have since established barricades around Peshawar, while telecommunications providers have throttled data services in several urban centers.

Federal authorities moved quickly to replace provincial leadership, appointing Dr. Muhammad Fakhr Alam Irfan as chief secretary to oversee the transition. The federal cabinet justified the takeover by accusing the PTI administration of deliberate indifference toward rising terrorism. This escalation follows the October 3 collapse of security negotiations between the two sides. The PTI maintains the crackdown is a political maneuver designed to suppress their demands for the release of party founder Imran Khan, rather than a genuine effort to address provincial instability.
