Delhi police crackdown intensifies as protests hit Connaught Place

Security forces swarmed the Inner Circle of Connaught Place on Sunday, detaining members of the Students' Federation of India and various Leftist groups. The maneuver follows a weekend of mass arrests across the national capital, where thousands were held during a high-stakes demonstration demanding the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Delhi police crackdown intensifies as protests hit Connaught Place

The detention of activists at Connaught Place marks the latest escalation in a tense standoff between authorities and opposition groups. Just hours earlier, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) confirmed the release of its leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das. These individuals had been held under preventive arrest after being intercepted by police at Delhi airport upon their arrival from Mumbai.

Delhi remains under tight control, with officials citing the need to maintain public order. Police have filed over 20 FIRs related to protests on October 10, alleging obstruction of government duties and physical assault against law enforcement officers. These legal actions accompany a broader strategy of containment that includes the closure of 45 Metro stations and the installation of barricades at the Ghazipur border.

The political fallout from the weekend's events continues to widen. Opposition figures, including Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and CPI(M) member Pinarayi Vijayan, were among the estimated 1,000 people detained during the Jantar Mantar demonstrations. As the CJP prepares for a press conference to address the ongoing situation, critics are labeling the heavy-handed police response a deliberate suppression of democratic assembly.
