The unrest centered on a demonstration led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. In an online statement, Gupta described the actions of the opposition as deliberate attempts to disrupt communal harmony. She specifically praised the restraint shown by law enforcement, noting that the government intends to prevent future protests from interfering with the daily lives of residents.
The security response included the closure of 45 metro stations and the erection of barricades at the Ghazipur border. Authorities detained several high-profile figures, including AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, CPI(M) leader MA Baby, and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Police also intercepted CJP activists Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das directly upon their arrival at the airport, citing a lack of protest permits. Amid the detentions, officials informed Dipke of his grandmother’s death in Maharashtra, offering assistance for his travel home. While most detainees have been released, police confirmed that CJP leadership remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
