The political temperature in Delhi remains high following mass detentions and the deployment of security forces to suppress protests demanding the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. CPI(M) MP John Brittas escalated the confrontation, warning that the government’s efforts to blockade the city would only intensify the movement. Brittas argued that the current administration's security measures were effectively turning the entire capital into a protest zone, asserting the basic right of citizens to navigate and assemble in the city.
Legal developments provided a brief reprieve today as a Delhi Executive Magistrate court ordered the release of three CJP activists—Abhijit Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka. The trio had been taken into preventive custody immediately upon landing in Delhi. Under the conditions of their release, they are prohibited from engaging in any activities deemed to breach public peace for the next year, according to their counsel, Ratna Singh. The broader crackdown on Saturday saw the detention of over 1,000 individuals, including high-profile opposition figures such as Arvind Kejriwal, Pinarayi Vijayan, and Mamata Banerjee.
