Anurag Thakur Alleges Opposition Undermines Democracy After Poll Losses

Former Union minister Anurag Thakur accused opposition parties of attacking India’s constitutional institutions as a cover for electoral failure. Speaking during Navratri celebrations in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP leader dismissed recent protests against the Election Commission’s voter roll revision as a politically motivated effort to weaken democratic integrity.

Thakur argued that opposition groups maintain a selective faith in the Election Commission and Electronic Voting Machines, praising the systems when victorious while questioning their legitimacy upon defeat. He contended that such rhetoric relies on falsehoods and serves agendas that undermine the rule of law. According to the minister, those who believe they stand above established institutions threaten the functional stability of the country.

Addressing the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, Thakur defended the removal of deceased voters, duplicate entries, and individuals who have migrated. He challenged critics to explain why ineligible names should remain on the rolls, noting that the process in Himachal Pradesh provided ample time for party representatives and booth-level agents to raise objections. Regarding public demonstrations, he insisted that while the right to protest exists, all groups must adhere to legal procedures and obtain necessary permissions for their gatherings.
