Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi confirmed the alliance will take to the streets again on October 12, marking a sharp intensification in the standoff between the government and the opposition. Gandhi characterized the administration’s response to recent demonstrations as an act of suppression, accusing Delhi Police and ruling party affiliates of orchestrating physical attacks against students and women. He specifically targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that police forces allowed political cadres to act with impunity.
Beyond the street demonstrations, the opposition plans to approach Chief Justice Surya Kant on Monday. The goal is to secure judicial intervention regarding alleged electoral irregularities and the heavy-handed security measures deployed across the capital. Saturday’s events saw the closure of 45 Metro stations, widespread internet suspensions, and the detention of approximately 1,000 individuals, including opposition leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Pinarayi Vijayan, and Mamata Banerjee. Gandhi maintains that these tactics will fail to intimidate the opposition, asserting that the government’s efforts to quell dissent are only fueling broader public anger.
