The unrest centered on a CJP-led demonstration at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The situation escalated quickly as Delhi Police implemented a massive security lockdown, shuttering 45 Metro stations and erecting barricades at the Ghazipur border to contain the movement. Police detained several high-profile figures, including AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, CPI(M) leader MA Baby, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Gupta praised police personnel for their restraint while facing what she described as professional agitators. While most detainees were released throughout the evening, CJP leaders remained in custody pending further legal proceedings. The administration has signaled that heavy security presence will persist as authorities brace for potential follow-up demonstrations from groups including the AIYF and SFI. In a notable incident, police intercepted CJP activists Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das directly upon their arrival at the airport, informing them that their planned protest lacked official authorization. During his detention, Dipke was notified by authorities of the passing of his grandmother in Maharashtra.
