Himanta Biswa Sarma declares Nagaon victory a blow to Rahul Gandhi

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma framed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the Nagaon bypoll as a decisive rejection of Rahul Gandhi’s political strategy. Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma highlighted a significant shift in regional voting patterns, positioning the result as a validation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Devasish Sharma secured the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat with 713,622 votes, achieving a margin of 49.11 percent. Sarma noted that the party successfully expanded its vote share while simultaneously stifling the influence of the Congress party, which saw its support drop to 9 percent. The Chief Minister contrasted this with the performance of Badruddin Ajmal’s AIUDF, which captured approximately 38 to 39 percent of the vote.

Sarma emphasized that the win carries particular weight for local party workers, coming shortly after celebrations marking 25 years of Prime Minister Modi’s public service. The constituency, previously held by Congress in the 2019 and 2024 general elections, became vacant following the departure of Pradyut Bordoloi. Sarma described the result as a tribute to the Prime Minister’s connection with the state, promising that the party would continue to build on this momentum ahead of future electoral cycles.
