INDIA bloc MPs march to President to challenge Election Commission

Opposition lawmakers marched from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday, seeking President Droupadi Murmu’s intervention regarding the Election Commission of India. Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the coalition delegation demanded a formal inquiry into alleged institutional bias and irregularities that they claim have compromised the nation’s electoral integrity.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of orchestrating a climate of fear, citing the preemptive closure of metro stations and cancellation of train services intended to impede their demonstration. Kharge alleged that Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has actively shielded systemic dishonesty, contributing to a broader atmosphere of anxiety surrounding the democratic process. He further asserted that fellow commissioners have repeatedly flagged these procedural errors in private correspondence, yet no corrective measures have been implemented by the poll body.

During the march, RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha characterized the protest as a necessary stand against a structure of institutional imbalance. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi framed the assembly as a defense of the country’s democratic foundations, drawing support from across the political spectrum. As the delegation prepared to submit their formal memorandum to the President, senior leadership confirmed that their agitation will persist. KC Venugopal stated that the coalition intends to deliberate on further steps, signaling that the opposition remains committed to their campaign against the current conduct of the Election Commission.
