Gaurav Yadav Confirmed as Punjab Police Chief for Two-Year Term

The Punjab government has officially appointed IPS officer Gaurav Yadav as the state’s Director General of Police, locking in a two-year tenure for the veteran officer. The decision, approved by the Governor, follows a selection process involving a panel vetted by the Union Public Service Commission.

Yadav, a member of the 1992 IPS batch, had been serving in the role with additional charge since July 2022. The state government’s final selection pitted him against fellow batchmates Sharad Satya Chauhan and Harpreet Singh Sidhu, who were also under consideration for the top post.

This administrative move unfolds against a backdrop of intensifying political friction. Punjab Congress leader Pargat Singh recently leveled allegations of systemic corruption against the state administration, specifically targeting the office of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. These claims gained momentum after the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to take over a probe involving Enforcement Directorate correspondence with the state police. Singh characterized the current governance as a facade, citing ongoing scrutiny of the Chief Minister’s office as evidence of internal dysfunction.
