The diplomatic friction centers on remarks made by Ambassador Reuven Azar regarding the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks. While the Israeli envoy characterized Gaza and Lebanon as Iranian proxies, the Iranian mission countered that these populations are fighting for their own land and dignity. Tehran explicitly rejected the proxy label, framing the resistance as a natural response to prolonged military pressure.
Beyond the rhetoric, the Iranian statement questioned Israel’s status as a regional security guarantor, citing the destruction in Gaza—where casualties have reportedly exceeded 70,000—and strikes in Beirut and Qatar. The Embassy also pointed to the ongoing occupation of the Golan Heights as evidence of aggressive policy. By invoking history reaching back to 1948, Tehran argued that October 7 cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader context of Palestinian displacement. The mission further claimed that Israel’s international standing is faltering, citing the walkout during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent address at the United Nations General Assembly as proof of growing political and moral isolation.
