Badruddin Ajmal Predicts Victory in Nagaon By-Election

Anticipating the upcoming results for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has dismissed his political rivals, claiming he will be the one smiling when the ballots are counted. The by-election, held on October 6, marks a high-stakes three-way contest between the AIUDF, BJP, and Congress.

Ajmal’s confidence comes as the political landscape in Assam shifts following the vacancy of the Nagaon seat. The constituency, previously held by Congress, opened up after Pradyut Bordoloi defected to the BJP and secured a win in the 2026 Dispur Assembly elections. To fill the gap, the BJP has nominated former Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma, while Congress is backing former MLA Sibamoni Bora.

Beyond the local race, Ajmal has aligned himself with the Congress party’s broader grievances against the Election Commission. He publicly backed calls for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing concerns over judicial and administrative integrity. With the vote counting process currently underway across several constituencies in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, the Election Commission maintains that the full process will conclude by October 11.
