Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the child appeared physically unharmed following the encounter, which took place around 4 p.m. in the Marble Hill neighborhood. Witnesses described a chaotic scene involving several vehicles and agents identified by their attire as federal officers. Pedro Almarez, a local business owner, reported hearing gunfire before observing multiple ICE-marked vehicles surrounding the victim, who appeared to be in his twenties.
The New York Police Department confirmed its officers were not involved in the shooting and noted that federal authorities have launched their own investigation. While the NYPD reported the victim remained conscious during medical transport, details regarding the justification for the enforcement action remain scarce. ICE officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the tactics used during the operation.
Mamdani labeled the event unconscionable and initiated contact with President Donald Trump to demand a cessation of ICE enforcement actions within city limits. As federal investigators cordoned off the block, local residents gathered to voice their opposition, with bystanders heckling agents at the scene over the endangerment of civilians and minors during the arrest.
