The opposition alliance, led by Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, held a peaceful 'satyagraha' at the Mahatma Gandhi memorial to reiterate demands for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. The protest centers on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which opposition leaders describe as a coordinated scheme to manipulate voter access. Kharge explicitly accused the government and the Commission of orchestrating "vote theft," framing the administration's actions as a direct assault on the Constitution.
Rahul Gandhi escalated the rhetoric, alleging a criminal conspiracy involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. He claimed that authorities have actively suppressed peaceful dissent, citing instances where police blocked protests near Jantar Mantar and the Election Commission headquarters. The BJP dismissed these claims, with national leader Nitin Nabin labeling the opposition’s approach as anarchic and calling for Gandhi's resignation.
Local authorities have adopted a firm stance following the demonstrations. Delhi Police confirmed the filing of three FIRs related to the unrest, citing the obstruction of government work and the alleged manhandling of officers. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were named in reports following their detention on Wednesday, marking a significant hardening of the government's response to the ongoing political standoff.
