INDIA bloc demands public meeting with Election Commission

Standing before the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee challenged the Election Commission to open its doors to the opposition. He demanded that any meeting between the poll body and INDIA bloc leaders be broadcast live, fueling a standoff over alleged electoral irregularities.

The demonstration at Raj Ghat followed a series of blocked marches toward the Nirvachan Sadan and Jantar Mantar earlier this week. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Mallikarjun Kharge, gathered to voice grievances regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Banerjee specifically accused the Commission of maintaining a double standard, noting that officials have allegedly met with BJP representatives while ignoring requests from the opposition.

Congress members have centered their demands on the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing concerns over the transparency of the revision process. Pawan Khera pledged that the party’s non-violent satyagraha would persist until their conditions are met. Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari dismissed the protests as a political distraction, framing the opposition's actions as a confrontation with the broader Indian public rather than a legitimate inquiry into election procedures.
