Kerala Vigilance Bureau Reopens 2006 Case Involving CEC Gyanesh Kumar

A decades-old suicide case involving current Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is under renewed scrutiny by Kerala’s Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau. Vigilance Director Manoj Abraham confirmed the agency is reviewing files from 2006, following allegations that an initial investigation into the death of a civil engineer was suppressed.

The inquiry centers on the 2006 death of Lee See Been, a Malaysian engineer working for the PATI-BEL consortium on a major road infrastructure project. A suicide note allegedly left by the engineer implicated Kumar, who served as Public Works Department Secretary at the time. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala ordered the fresh probe after receiving complaints that external pressure derailed the original preliminary investigation nearly two decades ago.

Manoj Abraham told reporters the department is currently scrutinizing the case files, with a formal decision expected within the week. This development coincides with broader political friction between the opposition INDIA bloc and the Election Commission. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge recently announced that opposition MPs plan to hold a sit-in at Gandhi Smarak, protesting alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, further intensifying the scrutiny surrounding the Commissioner.
