Modi honors Shinzo Abe as memorial corridor opens in Varanasi

Standing alongside Akie Abe in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the late Japanese leader as a visionary architect of the modern India-Japan partnership. The meeting followed the emotional unveiling of a dedicated memorial corridor in Varanasi, a site that chronicles the profound diplomatic and personal bonds between the two nations.

The memorial, situated within the Rudraksh International Cooperation and Convention Centre, serves as a permanent tribute to the former Prime Minister’s legacy. Inaugurated by Akie Abe and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the space features a curated photo gallery highlighting critical milestones, including the 2015 visit to Varanasi where Modi and Abe first envisioned the convention center itself.

For Akie Abe, the installation offered a poignant reflection on her husband’s deep commitment to the bilateral relationship. The corridor commemorates his instrumental role in elevating the ties to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership, a mission recognized by India through the posthumous awarding of the Padma Vibhushan in 2021. By establishing this permanent exhibit, officials aim to preserve the history of a friendship that fundamentally reshaped the geopolitical landscape between New Delhi and Tokyo.
