The plan involves designating the Trump International Golf Club as a 'US Presidential Golf Course,' a move the former president claims was suggested by the Secret Service. Trump highlighted the site’s logistical advantages, specifically its proximity to an airport and its distance from high-rise structures that complicate security protocols. According to legal representative Harvey Oyer, the project aims to establish a globally recognized venue for current and former presidents, as well as visiting foreign heads of state. The Trump Organization would fund the construction of new presidential lodging and provide the federal government with access to the facility.
While local officials, including County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo, have expressed interest in the potential prestige the project could bring to the region, the proposal faces complex administrative hurdles. The Trump Organization owns the club but leases the underlying land from Palm Beach County, necessitating local government approval for any site modifications. The initiative follows a series of architectural and development projects led by Trump, including plans for a presidential library in a Miami skyscraper. Critics note that the proposal would inextricably link the presidency with Trump’s private business interests, even after his tenure concludes. The club previously served as the site of a 2024 assassination attempt against Trump, an event not mentioned in the current pitch to local commissioners.
