Before the pentobarbital was administered, Howard offered an apology to members of the victim’s family who watched from an adjacent room. His legal team had mounted a final effort to block the execution, citing claims of intellectual disability and concerns regarding the reliability of the lethal injection drugs used by the state. These appeals, presented to both the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court, were denied without comment, allowing the state to proceed.
The execution followed a recent high-profile incident in Tennessee, where inmate Christa Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital during a failed attempt on September 30. Attorneys for Howard had argued that the risks associated with the drug protocol in Tennessee mirrored those in Texas. Despite these warnings, Texas officials moved forward with the procedure, which concluded in 19 minutes. Howard is the seventh person executed in Texas this year, with two additional cases scheduled before the end of 2026.
