India Denies Musk’s Claims of Oligarch Interference in Starlink Entry

India’s Ministry of Communications has refuted allegations from Elon Musk that local oligarchs are obstructing Starlink’s expansion to protect their market monopoly. The government maintains that its satellite communication framework is strictly non-discriminatory and follows established security protocols, dismissing the billionaire’s claims as entirely baseless and misconceived.

The government clarified that three entities currently hold licenses for Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite services, all operating under the same regulatory timeline. Each applicant must undergo a rigorous security assessment to ensure user safety and data protection before receiving spectrum assignment. Currently, all three licensees are at the same stage of this administrative process.

This rebuttal follows a post on X where Musk alleged that unnamed interests were enforcing a monopolistic chokehold over the Indian market. In response, officials emphasized that the regulatory path remains open to any provider that demonstrates full compliance with national security standards, rejecting any suggestion that the licensing process is designed to favor domestic incumbents.
