The sharp rebuke came during the closing ceremony of the Seva Sankalp Yatra, attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Nabin questioned Gandhi’s motives, arguing that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process is a necessary administrative exercise to ensure accurate rolls. He challenged the opposition’s narrative, suggesting that defending the rights of those alleged to be infiltrators undermines the democratic process rather than protecting it.
This confrontation follows intensified protests by the INDIA bloc, which has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Rahul Gandhi has publicly vowed that his party will continue to face arrests and legal challenges until the commission addresses their grievances, describing the current political climate as a struggle to save the Constitution from a dictatorial regime. While the BJP maintains that the revision is a procedural safeguard, the opposition claims the process unfairly targets eligible voters, signaling a deepening institutional deadlock.
