The tension escalated Wednesday when Delhi Police intercepted opposition MPs attempting to march toward Jantar Mantar. The demonstration, sparked by alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, resulted in the detention of Gandhi and several colleagues, who were subsequently taken to the Barakhamba police station. Gandhi framed the confrontation as a fundamental struggle for the Constitution, asserting that no amount of government pressure or legal threat would deter the alliance from its objective.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge joined the rhetoric, dismissing the intimidation tactics of the ruling administration. The situation remains volatile following an FIR filed against Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other leaders for their unauthorized entry into Akashvani Bhavan during Tuesday’s protests. With the opposition digging in—Congress MP Pawan Khera declared their readiness to occupy the streets overnight—the call for Kumar’s resignation has become the central rallying point for the bloc’s ongoing campaign against the Election Commission.
