The demonstration, prompted by concerns over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, saw high-ranking Congress leaders stopped by security cordons. Rahul Gandhi, seen waving to cameras before his detention, attempted to force open a barricaded gate alongside fellow INDIA bloc representatives. The situation grew volatile when Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was removed from the site after refusing to vacate the ground, alleging physical mistreatment by police personnel during the scuffle.
Opposition voices characterized the police response as an assault on constitutional rights. Charanjit Singh Channi labeled the government's approach as hooliganism, while Pawan Khera cited Article 19 to challenge the restriction of protests at Jantar Mantar, a historically designated site for dissent. RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha went further, describing the crackdown as a direct strike against democratic foundations. This confrontation follows a previous day of unrest at Akashvani Bhawan, signaling a widening rift between the opposition coalition and the Election Commission regarding the ongoing electoral registration process.
